The fastest way to parachute is to look straight down, and use the strafe keys (A/D by default) to go from side to side.
If you notice that you parachute in later than other players, see "3.1 - Optimizing H1Z1" for tips on how to fix this. This will give you a chance to get yourself "situated" before taking on other players. There loot is less abundant, but you'll face less opposition and avoid the early game kill frenzy. If you are newer to the game, you might be better off starting off by landing in a forest or near campground areas on the outskirts of the map.
